Restaurant Lt. Cornelis in Amsterdam. Price range: medium
Lt. Cornelis is a Dutch restaurant in the middle of the center in Amsterdam. It’s in an alley across from Eetcafé ‘t Pakhuys, next to Spui square. When you enter the big stairs, you’ll find the restaurant. It’s in a beautiful historical building. On the wall replicas of Dutch paintings from the golden ages and the infamous Delftsblauw plates.
When I think of a Dutch cuisine restaurant I think of the traditional Dutch food like haring and stroopwafels. I was excited to find out how they want to put the Netherlands on the food map. Every course of the menu was an elevated version of the products and flavors you might expect. They gave a modern twist to the preparation and it was a good representation of the Dutch kitchen. We went for a 4-course dinner paired with a wine arrangement. Besides the lovely venue, the service was great too.
Overall it was a good experience, I was there with my sister for a long overdue dinner date. We sat down on the big sofa and had the time and space to catch up. I will definitely come back again.
Amuses trio: Cold vegetable soup, cheese biscuits/crackers, and fluffy poffertjes on a cheese sauce. Usually, when you order poffertjes, you’ll get a couple of mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar. This was nice for a change.
First-course starter: Potato salad with shredded beef, vegetable chips, pickled onion, croutons, egg yolk and a creamy foam. Decorated with micro herbs. A lot of flavors and textures on a plate. What I liked was that it was a light meal with refreshing flavors.
The first wine served was a white wine from Maastricht, the Netherlands made by the Dutch. It was a light subtle wine.
Second-course starter: Guinea fowl with a poached quail egg and peas prepared in three ways with Lemon melissa and a poultry jus with pretty micro herbs. The green really comes through on this plate, it was as delicious as it looks.
Third course main: Dutch beef sirloin with seasonal vegetables like white asparagus, carrots, beetroots, tomatoes, and a beef jus. The meat was perfect and really tender.
The main dish was paired with a red wine from the Algarve, Portugal.
Fourth-course dessert: As for dessert they managed to add a typical Dutch flavor, Jenever, an alcoholic beverage infused in the gel next to the strawberries. A hazelnut parfait, vanilla ice-cream, chocolate pudding, and chocolate cake.
Last but not least, fresh Mint tea with honey and a cookie.
